While the fastest way to organise decades of digital photos is by date, what if you want to add more context?  What if you want to know exactly what happened in March 2016?

Photos speak a thousand words but they also rely on our memory.  Memories fade over time so writing down important details becomes more and more important the more years we have to remember. 

Curating tools like tags, facial recognition and keywords help to give shape to a chronological photo system.  But what if you are the type of person that wants to capture more details?

Enter the Timeline. 

Debbie Berry, family historian extraordinaire, has been keeping a family timeline for years.  She has developed a system for using the timeline to inform and help her in her photo organisation. 

Using Lightroom Classic, a date based folder system and a timeline method, she captures all the important details of her family's life from past generations up to her own nuclear family.  This strengthens her personal photo organisation by creating a life framework that supports organising, labelling, and contextual clarity.

And she is kindly sharing all that information with us in this month's short course!

In this course, Debbie will show us how she captures captures the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, and WHY — so your images are organised not just by date, but with meaning.

Who is this class for?

This class is for you if you are looking to create a document supported by your photos that captures the details of your family's life.

The goal for this class is that you will be able to create your own family timeline.

  • Different Timeline examples
  • Options for creating your own timeline.
  • How to create your own timeline in Google Docs
  • How to integrate a folder based photo system into your timeline and vice versa
  • How Debbie uses Lightroom Classic to create a day based photo system that is then customised according to her timeline.
  • How to use your Timeline with Keywords and Captions
  • How to be consistent in your documenting.

You will receive:

  • Access to the recording of the short course so you can watch it on your own time. (video).
  • Slides of the presentation for keeping (pdf)
  • Ability to ask further questions in the course portal where the recordings and downloads are hosted.

  • The class recording is 60 minutes.
  • This class teaches you how to edit in Lightroom Classic. You can also use these tips for the free Lightroom App which does not require a subscription.
